Santo & Johnny "Y la Amo"

This is definitely going on a summer time mixtape. Get leisurely with these guitar-wielding brothers as they cover the Beatles' "And I Love Her."

You might also recognize their legendary chart topper "Sleepwalk".

Tobacco "Fresh Hex" featuring Beck

This track has been sitting in my inbox for longer than I would've liked, but punctuality aside, it's a real gem, so I didn't want to leave it to slip through the cracks. It's catchy, at least by Anticon standards. For the rest of the world, it's glitchy, heavily processed and super digital, but that's not a bad thing...

The album Maniac Meat is available May 25 on Anticon.

Knife gets props from OkayPlayer

This man Knife is part of Savannah's Dope Sandwich crew and part their new group project, the Union of Scared Monsters. His solo project The 2000 Yard Stare just got a real nice review from Okayplayer, and scored 5 points higher than the new Little Brother album. Knife has paid dues and put in work. He's a skilled MC. You may or may not like his music (depending on your taste) because there's not a hint of pop on it, and it's dark - but you can't question his lyrical abilities.

He ripped it up at the Hip Hop Hell Freestyle Massacre last year.

Grab 2 tracks off the new Union of Sacred Monsters record.

Maf - Circa '78

Maf is one the illest in Savannah. His crates are deep, the beats are off the chain and he can spit something fierce. He shows his distinctly southern roots, but pays serious tribute to classic hip hop's recipe of banging, soul-heavy beats with intelligent flows and some boasting.
Maf - "Tears" featuring Nom and Ko - banging hip hop, dope sample-heavy beat built on soul vocalizations, horn stabs and twinkling chimes.

Maf - "New Hearthrob" - this is some next level music - blurring the lines between hip hop, pop and Stax-era rhythm & blues.

Little Brother "Before the Night is Over"

Producer J.Bizness made the beat for this joint off Little Brother's album Left Back. He's giving everybody a taste of this jam that feels like that classic LB stee. Download it for free here.

Video: Tanya Morgan "Bang + Boogie"

Tanya Morgan drops a nice video for their song "Bang+Boogie", Enjoy.

I Spit On Your Corpse (1974)

Imagine No Country for Old Men, but with gratuitous nudity, few, if any, logically behaving characters, painfully awkward dialog and rampant feminine criminality. If you take all that, wrap it up in a gift box that feels a lot longer than it is, and add a kick ass soundtrack that is Lalo Shiffrin meets Ennio Morricone and Muzak. That is I Spit On Your Corpse aka Girls for Rent.

Lego my Cuba

You should hunt down a copy of the film I Am Cuba (Soy Cuba), it's a Russian-directed film about Cuba made in 1964 or thereabouts. The cinematography is brilliant, and the opening scene is this incredible, single tracking shot that goes through a roof top party, descends the side of a building and lands in the pool, before wandering onward. No cuts. Just a work of sheer brilliance. While looking to see if it was available online, I found this re-enactment of the shot made out of Legos. Enjoy.

Oscillations Part 2

This is a sweet compilation of future beats from Jus Like Music and Apple Break. Some dubstep, downtempo electronic, hip hop and more. There's some stuff from both Alex B, and kidkaneval, both of whom have gotten shouts out on the blog before. Besides that, there's a bunch of hotness that I was previously unfamiliar with, but am now digging.

Download the compilation here. (It's free).

Shout out to the Potholes crew for putting me onto this.

Vinyl Appreciation Night #2

The inaugural V.A.N. was last month, and it was super cool - by far the best way to spend a laidback Sunday evening. If you don't know, the basic premise is to invite a bunch of DJs and record collectors to get together and play their favorite deep cuts for an equally cool audience. There's also some video art, some buy/sell/trade record action, and plenty of serious chilling. The next one will be April 25 at Indigo Arts (703D Louisville Rd. Savannah, GA) - it will be the closing event of the 2nd Annual Savannah Urban Arts Festival.

Union of Sacred Monsters

Download two new tracks from the Union of Sacred Monsters, a collaborative effort from members of the Dope Sandwich crew. "Rat" is a crazy house party rocking, breakdancers' anthem. "Put it all together" is a laidback tune offering up a free lesson on how to make true school hip hop.
They will be unveiling the LP during the Savannah Urban Arts Festival [see the next post].

Tea Party Jesus

This is the funniest thing I've seen come out of the political realm since Tina Fey's Palin impersonation (and they are connected in that they both use the ridiculousness of verbatim statements put in a different context to make their points.

Tea Party Jesus. They have tons of these. This one is amazing because it's a direct quote from Glen Beck if I remember correctly...

Cheap Trick "Gonna Raise Hell"

If you're looking to rock out or start trouble, then you need to be jamming this. The Pink Floyd-esque jams in the latter half of the song are monsters.

If you were into Freaks and Geeks you might remember this tune from the epic Halloween episode. If you don't know Freaks and Geeks, get wise to it - the origins of Judd Apatow's unique style of comedic genius.

Alex B's Moments

This album Moments from Alex B is fairly brilliant. It's out on Tuesday (4/6). Definitely worth paying for it.

The album colonizes some new musical territory - or maybe it is the confluence of styles with a lot of creative momentum. Alex B's music stumbles drunkenly through fields of post-Dilla hip hop and dubstep - it is electronic space funk - It has the energy of jazz infused Golden era hip hop and a pinch of Boards of Canada type downtempo, along with enough tech crunch to affirm that you do indeed live in the future.
"Talk it Out"

If you've ever enjoyed Animal Magic era Bonobo than you'll definitely enjoy this record. Beginning to end. No skips. No awkward pauses. Steady grooving.

Das Racist

I don't know if this is ironic, or a statement on how culture has become a superficial void, or whether it's  some stupid fun that just might be performance art.

Das Racist are some crazy looking mfers and this song is really funny.
