MoogFest Day 1

There is no doubt that MoogFest is going well so far. Day 1 included a short performance by Devo (Bob Mothersbaugh hurt his thumb, so Mark and Jerry were backed by Octopus Project, who btw put on an incredible show and I would highly recommend checking out. They're like the stylistic love child of Tortoise and Of Montreal.). There was a killer DJ set by Bonobo, and massive performances by Big Boi, MGMT, Dan Deacon (I hadn't been a huge fan of his recorded material, but his live show is something special - like clearing a giant circle in a crowd of a thousand+ and having his friend GSP lead a group interpretative dance). All that closed out with an epic Halloween themed set by Girl Talk that officially ranks in the top 5 live shows of my life.

Here are a couple of pics from last night:
Octopus Project opened up the evening with a lively set.
Devo accepts a MoogFest Innovation Award after jamming "She's The One You Want" and "It's a Beautiful World" with Octopus Project.
Even though it's only Friday, there's no shortage of costumed folks. This wasn't one of the most elaborate, but got serious points for sass. The photo doesn't do justice to the attitude level.
MGMT puts on a solid show, but does not deviate far from their album presentation. "Weekend Wars" live was still epic.
GSP's interpretative dance during Dan Deacon's set was special.

My Dry Wet Mess

I don't know what the name means. Maybe it's a joke in Spain (MDWM is from Barcelona). Whatever it's about stops mattering when you hear how good his crunchy future beats are.

Grab a remix he did of a Flying Lotus track here and a cut off his debut album here. His new album, Irrational Alphabet, is tight (albeit short -> 11 tracks in 37 minutes). However, I'd highly recommend grabbing a copy.

Maurice's BBQ

If you're driving along interstate 26 in the general vicinity of Columbia, SC you're almost guaranteed to see billboards for Maurice's BBQ aka Maurice's Piggie Palace. Good BBQ and plenty of Confederate memorabilia (although actually less than I remembered). All the mustard based sauce you can handle.

Halloween

Halloween is a serious holiday in Savannah, and there's no shortage of good shows this year: This affair, hosted by Safe and Sound, features an eclectic troupe of electronic and similarly inclined folks. Magic Places has some new tunes on bandcamp that are worth a listen.
Saturday night also features KidSyc@Brandywine over at HangFire, or, if you want to get a little more tripped out, the place to be is at the Jinx for GAM and blood wrestling (an activity, not a band).

Edgar Oliver

The Unchained Tour rolled through Savannah last weekend. I missed it to attend the wedding of two close friends, but here is an example of what went on - an unparalleled story about growing up in Savannah as told by Hostess City native Edgar Oliver. He is part of the tour, which features a handful of Moth story tellers traveling all over the state of GA for the past few months, and I had the pleasure of meeting him briefly while writing this story about the tour.
This is a truly amazing tale.

This is what's happening in NYC. Some get-ready-for-winter, 80s-throwback, minimal synth-hop. Don't take your girlfriend near these guys.

Pat's Jam by Seven Seas

I found a copy of this 45 at the SCAD Record Fair last weekend (although I wasn't the one who made this YouTube video).

It's one of several Glades label 45s I've turned up during recent digs, and all of them have been awesome, so I started doing a little research. Found out that Henry Stone worked Glade for a while. He also worked with King to sign James Brown for "Please, Please, Please" - put Jimmy Bo Horne and Betty Wright on Alston - and later introduced KC and the Sunshine Band on TK. He distributed some of the best disco in the South during 70s. Here's an excellent bio of Stone.

Flying Lotus "Kill Your Co-Workers"

This is without a doubt the cheeriest song with 'kill' in the title...It also confirms my suspicion that we are about to see a re-emergence of late-90s/early 00's experimental drum & bass type stuff. Dubstep has been circulating long enough that it's only a matter of time before someone (like FlyLo) pushes the tempo back up a little. This track reminds a lot of Jega, and/or some of the cheerier Aphex Twin stuff.

Vinyl Appreciation #8

Definitely our best poster design yet. Thanks to Carrie Nations.
Sunday, October 24 from 5-10 p.m. at Muse Arts Warehouse (703d Louisville Rd. Savannah). All the crazy jams you can handle. Weird video projections. Good people. Hard chilling.

Pink Kodiak

Former Savannahian-turned-Iowan, one-man-band Pink Kodiak is hard at work on a new project, further exploring the uncharted territory of Death Pop, the style that probably best sums up much of his catalog. The new EP, One Man Wolfpack, is in production now, and he sent over a new song called "A Narrow Escape from Drowning" that you should definitely check out.

Video for an awesome new song from Berlin's Robot Koch. It's glitchy build, with slow-building, beautifully crafted ambient melodic accents. If you remember the glory days of Autechre, this will take you back.

Baggy Spandex

As the story goes (and I have no way of validating it, I'm passing along second hand info), Kotchy was wandering through Brooklyn and stumbled across a box of records. While flipping through them, a door opened and out walked the lady who played Janine in Ghostbusters wearing baggy spandex shorts. (It's got that certain crazy-enough-to-be-true quality to it)...
Anyway, Kotchy grabbed the records and went home to turn the box's contents into an EP. The results are fun. Great if you have musical ADD and a keen enough ear to place most of the samples.

Video: Darkstar "Gold"

Darkstar covers an old Human League B-Side. It's a tidy little track. It's really just waiting for a ridiculously hard bass-to-the-max remix though. Darkstar has an album coming out on Hyperdub Records October 19. Look for that.

G.R.E.A.T. SCOTT @ A3C

First met G.R.E.A.T. SCOTT last spring when he came down for the Savannah Urban Arts Festival. He stayed in Savannah for a few years way back in the day. Maf told me he was an inspiration to him to step up his craft, so I wasn't surprised when he rocked the stage.
He had a short set during A3C (times were getting cut for a bunch of people - it's almost impossible to get showcases back on schedule), however, he made the most of it. This was his opening track. He's got an album in the works, and I bet it'll be crazy.

Banksy's take on the Simpson's credits

Found this via Dave Allen and twitter. Pretty great stuff. Not sure whether this is real or not (his name and imagery are starting to get appropriated at a decent rate these days),  either way, it's worth 1:44 of your life.

Just got back from A3C

Spent the weekend in Atlanta for A3C. Good times. Camp Lo performed Saturday night and killed it. They also announced that they're working on a project together with Pete Rock that's going to be called 80 Blocks from Tiffany's. Not sure whether that's directly related to the release of the documentary or not...Rhymefest closed out Saturday night with an inspired performance. Besides pulling a kid out of the crowd to do Kanye's verse on "Brand New", he kicked a super tight freestyle that played off some crowd interaction (camera poses and kissing somebody's aunt in the first row) and a great punchline about Eddie Long. The most interesting part of his set came when he stopped and talked for a few minutes about how he's running for city council in the district where he grew up and why people need to become directly involved in improving their communities (a theme near and dear to my own heart.) Homeboy Sandman and Tanya Morgan also killed sets. Brittany Bosco was amazing. Reks was dope.
I'm also happy to report that there are a lot of interesting young artists out there who bringing some really fresh things in the next couple years.
I came home with a gang of CDs, videos, pics and web links, so as I get a chance to sift through it all, I'll post some of the best finds.

Starland Walls

If you're in the neighborhood of Bull and 41st Streets, then you need to stop and appreciate some of the new wall pieces.
Adolfo aka iNope on this one. Big shout out to him for teaching the graf workshop during SUAF last spring.
This piece by Dr. Z had me bugged out because the pieces drip off onto the sidewalk, so from around the corner, I thought someone left a bunch of his fliers on the ground. Turned out to be part of the piece.

Big Boi, Devo, Girl Talk, El-P, MGMT, Cee Lo, Caribou, Hot Chip...

It could be a list of some of my favorite artists who really changed how I listened to music...and it is just a few of the amazing shows that will be going on during MoogFest in Asheville, NC at the end of the month. It's going to be completely chainless.

The whole schedule is crazy.
