Malachai Return to the Ugly Side

These guys from England put out one of my favorite albums of recent memory with their debut, which manages to straddle both awesome rock n roll and laid back, spaced out charmers. They're back at it and they've got a new album coming soon on Domino. Grab a copy of a new song off the record here.

Oddisee x Stik Figa

The Mello Music Group, which is holding down real hip hop better than anyone right now, just dropped this little comp that shows off just how real it is right now.
This jam features DC-producer Oddisee (along with Dunc from DTMD) and Topeka-bred MC Stik Figa (who shows that parts of the midwest bear alot more southern influence than others) - the results are ill. The whole comp is tight.

Pujol

No longer is Pujol just a misspelling of one of the greatest baseball players to wear a St. Louis Cardinals jersey. This young Nashvillian named Pujol is responsible for this Jack White produced jam that owes a stylistic nod to the charms of the Damned. Check it out here (and download it if you like it) via Spin.

Happy Thanksgiving

May you wind up in a field of maize with the squaw of your dreams. Give Thanks. I have a huge backlog of music to post, but preparation for the holidays has kept me too busy. Come back in a day or two for some serious jams.

New Fujiya & Miyagi

This laidback british duo who rock Japanese alter-egos are working on their 3rd album. The first one was really good, the second one, good, but not quite as high ranking as the debut (IMHO). The first track to get a video shows they haven't left behind what they know -> kraut-y, angsty-yet-cool, electro-rock.

Slang Like This

It's not exactly Big L's "Ebonics" so far as a comprehensive breakdown of slang goes, but "Slang Like This" is a real grimey banger nonetheless.

Nancy Sinatra was tough

She might be a household name for "These Boots are Made for Walkin'" but that doesn't mean Nancy Sinatra was a one trick pony. This track is so badass.

fLako

Some wonderfully crunchy material from fLako. His Mini Tollbooth LP drops Dec. 17 on Project Moon Circle, and is inspired by one of my favorite children's books of all time The Phantom Tollbooth. Using that as inspiration alone would have been enough for a shout out from me, but the fact that his sound is nice doesn't hurt. Just in time to pull the headphones tight and let 'em double as ear muffs if you're stuck in a northern climate. J-Live is nice

Seriously. He's ill. At A3C, I saw him rap and DJ at the same time - cutting up the beat while he ripped it. If rap money were a meritocracy, he'd have Oprah's dough.

Support him financially if you appreciate the artistry.

A3C's RV Mixtape

Parked in the front of the Masquerade during this year's A3C festival was a large RV - not a strange sight at a festival if you're seeing some jam bands, but at a hip hop festival, it sort of stuck out - what also drew attention to the vehicle was the steady stream of artists coming and going from it. It was a mobile studio, among other things, and this mixtape is some of the results.

Jon Hopkins

Call a doctor because this kid is sick. He's worked with Brian Eno, David Holmes and a gang of other folks. He played a live late night set at MoogFest that made question reality as I knew it. His stuff is a real return to the emerging days of IDM. He was twisting up jungle drums and lacing them with these angelic chimes and the whole place was just going nuts, dancing all over.
Here's a video of him live in London - via this interview with him at Create Digital Music.

Kotchy makes you nod along

This Brooklyn-based producer steps into the vibey realm of Blockhead with a more hip hop infused take on what Hot Chip did for electro after listening to the Flaming Lips. All that being said, it's pretty cool. This song is called "Sometimes I Get Down" and begs the question, "why not more often, if the results are this good."

Diplo x Lil Jon

I'm left wishing Lil Jon's contribution had been a little more content-rich (I know, what should I expect?). Sometimes, I'm too cerebral for club-destroying anthems like this, however, I'm not so dense as to fail to recognize that this song is ridiculously tough.

MoogFest Day 2

After Day 1 of MoogFest, I was pretty sure there was no way Day 2 would stack up. Afterall, can you get away with having Massive Attack and Thievery Corporation, both of whom I've liked but more in a laidback way, follow the throbbing madness of Dan Deacon, Girl Talk, et al.?

The answer is yes. Massive Attack puts on an incredible show. If they come to your town, city or college campus, go to see them, regardless of what the ticket costs (unless you know the sound guy is going to be incompetent*). Walls of sound, that most of the show leaned toward some psychedelic industrial feel, blasted out against a backdrop of LED panels that flashed everything from transcript tidbits of the WikiLeaks "Collateral Murder" video to stats on global access to drinking water and other factoids.
*On an aside, with the exception of a little technical delay about two songs into Dan Deacon's set, the sound engineering at every show I saw in the Asheville Civic Center was spot-on, and under some difficult circumstances (going from sub-bass-heavy dubstep sets to multi-piece bands blending electric and acoustic instruments). Props due to the folks running boards.
Also, managed to be in the right place at the right time for a secret DJ set by Four Tet and Caribou. They spun some crazy experimental house to a small, but appreciative dance floor. A few hours earlier, Caribou played a sweet set that focused heavily on the newest album, but with some extended hard dancing parts. The guy playing drums was incredible. I think there were two songs off Andorra that were both excellent, and it kind of made both Carrie and I wish that they snuck in a track off Milk of Human Kindness, because it probably would've awesome.
One of the best things about the evening was the array of costumed folks littering the streets.
