Vinyl Appreciation

Sunday, July 31, 5-10 p.m. at Muse Arts Warehouse. Cool out with a laidback analog musical explosion that defies genres and the social mores of civilized high brow types.

Hebermehl's pic o' the day

I don't know if he did this, or just walked past it, but I dig this shot from Hebermehl, snapped in the vicinity of 46th and MLK. Via his site

Holy Ghost x Adult Swim

Animator Adam Fuchs gives a dope treatment to this Holy Ghost jam, and it will appear on Adult Swim, or the Williams Streeters just wanted it to be cooler, or something...

Kjunya "Puttin My Life on These Beats"

I love this track, and not just because I did the beat. Welcome to the South. Download a copy here.

Stalley

Can't front on the fact that I completely slept on Stalley, but this is too good not to post. The video is fresh from the last day or two, but the mixtape it originates from has been floating around since February. This guy just signed to Maybach, and it seems kind of crazy that he'd join the ranks of Rick Ross...I don't know dude's whole catalog though...like I said, I just got on this today...maybe he's got a few "Pac Man" type joints in his rhyme book. I hope not though.

Diplo x Datsick

Check out this dance floor destroyer from Diplo and Datsick: "Pick Your Poison"
They "leaked" it on youtube via Mad Decent. Nice manatee. Now pick your face up.

Random reading

Some random reading for you this week:
  • If you'd been following the whole Rupert Murdoch-Phone Hacking-Parliament hearing-NOTW fallout last week, and you caught wind of the incident when someone smacked Murdoch with a plate full of shaving cream (how the hell did someone sneak that into the hearings?), then you might be interested to read this profile on Murdoch's young wife (who jumped the shaving cream attacker like Secret Service) from 2000, which Rupert was not happy about...
  • NPR has an interesting piece about Tinnitus - you know, the piercing frequency that lingers in your ear after you leave a loud show in a small club?
  • And finally, a piece about the cyber war arms race from Business Week. Did anyone else catch the news that a foreign government hacked into military databases and wandered through them cherry pickin' intel for several months before being discovered? That was something that got buried amidst Michelle Bachmann's migraines and News of the World, but it seems scary and relevant.

Safe and Sound x Aux Arc

Gus over at Safe and Sound just sent me this cool video he did with SAV/ATL trio Aux Arc. It's shot live in a studio with the guys and some lights - pretty minimal, but very effective. Videographer/Lighting Magician Matt T. Perry sets the scene with his homemade lighting board of tricks. He also ran lights for them and Sunglasses during sets at Stopover. The tune itself is a jangly, garage-pop gem called "Sixteen."

Downliners Sekt

This Barcelona crew makes music that sounds like Prefuse 73 and Autechre let their gear make sweet love.
Get a copy of their new EP here. They have some other albums available for free too.

"Rich and Black"

It's Raekwon and Nas getting it like "Verbal Intercourse" era.

Wugazi

This is pretty serious. Get it here.

Finest Ego - UK/Ireland

These Finest Ego compilations have been touring the world finding great future beat, space hop, wonk-y type stuff and packaging it up for easy consumption. The New Zealand/Australia comp they did was dope too. It's sort of surprising they're just getting around to the UK, considering how parts of it have been a wellspring of great electronic music recently. Unless you are super down with underground beats, these are all people you've never heard of, but who definitely deserve to be heard. Check it out here, available via download and cassette tape on Aug. 5.

Daily Bread mixtape

If you need a dose Detroit courtesy of the Mello Music Group, check out the mixtape preview of the new Apollo Brown x Hassan Mackey collabo. Nice. Lots of boom bap. Grab a copy here.

Also, if you're not down with Mello Music Group's email list, get with it because they've been giving away free albums from the archives the past few weeks, including some old Hassan Mackey, Sareem and more.

KidSyc "Really Cool"

KidSyc on the rhymes and Ali on the beat. This thing is fresher than the farmer's market.

Some ol' Throwback

Why isn't anyone this smooth and this G these days? Bun B is coming to Savannah next week (7/15 @ Deja Groove), and I bet it will be wild.

Soon Is So Far Away (Redux)

The folks at Blunt Guts Nation have just put up this collection of remixes, and they are worth checking out. Lots of mellow, spacey vibes (the first joint will hit with fans of Erykah Badu's Madlib collab). This Blind Prophet remix caught my attention for it's chill dubstep vibe. Nice early set track to get the heads nodding.

Grab the whole album here.

Reptar "Blastoff"

Reptar stopped in Savannah during the spring for the Stopover festival and they were one of several bands that I missed because the schedule was so packed that some tough choices had to be made. I don't regret the decision, but if I had a time machine...
This new video for Blastoff is crazy. The tune has the sort of energy you might remember from Labyrinth era David Bowie. If you've enjoyed Yeasayer, Fool's Gold or any of the other groups floating that synth-pop-meets-afrobeat-dance-freakout sound, you'll wanna get with this Athens, GA based group.

Reptar - Blastoff from Ross Brubeck on Vimeo.

If you don't hear them now, you'll likely hear about them later because folks like NME and Paste are raving about them.

Tasty Morsels Volume 1

The first installment in a new series featuring great sets from Vinyl Appreciation Night, the monthly listening party at the Muse Arts Warehouse in Savannah.

Volume 1 includes two vinyl-only sets from a pair of 2010 events, and might be enjoyed by fans of Vanilla Fudge, Sly Stone, Mulatu Astatke and such.

Download Volume 1 here.
Check out Vinyl Appreciation.

Cool Kids x Bun B

Need something to battle the summer heat? Check this coolness from the eponymous Kids + the Trillest Man Alive. This is a joint off the Cool Kids' forthcoming release When Fish Ride Bicylcles. More info.

KJunya "Take Me Back"

It's not a proper video by any stretch of the imagination, but the track is ridiculous. If you ever listened to Tupac, you might be feeling this...seriously...it's like that Savannah. Go here to download a copy (Use this link if you re-post; please do not re-host the file)

The Dirty Covers compilation

Jeremiah Stuard (of Savannah-based band HOWLER and t-shirt designer/printers WABCO) has assembled an impressive compilation of really eclectic cover songs by a really eclectic set of Savannah acts like Dare Dukes (folky-alt-rock), Magic Places + Britt Scott (electronic), Cusses (Dance-Punk), Black Tusk (swamp metal) and many many more (including a re-edit of mine).
The album release will be at the Jinx on July 27, in conjunction with Rock N Roll Bingo. It's gonna be awesome.
