Kool A.D. "51"

Feeling this. The future and the past at the same time.

Danny! "Keep Your Head to the Sky"

This joint is classic inspiration. Big shout out to Danny! for this one (btw - it's the tune of his that caught Jay-Z's attention). Read the interview with him in XXL.

Unda "Tomorrow Never Comes"

Props to Unda doing his thing on this new EP called Tomorrow Never Comes. Bangkok to ATL, he handles all the production and spits on a couple tracks too. Definitely feeling the opening tune "Dear Aquarius," but there's jewels scattered all the way from front to back. The material is considerably darker than some of his past work, a symptom of some things he was going through last year. Give it a listen:

DJ Soko x Guilty Simpson x Gensu Dean

Yup. Bout this. Guilty Simpson with the words, Gensu Dean on the beat, and DJ Soko with the cuts. This is being released as a limited edition 7" by Mello Music Group.

Pizza! "We Come From the Swamp"

How can something be infectiously '80s synth pop-tastic and nihilistic? Observe:

Good Paul

Sweet post-dubstep brah! Just kidding, at least about the "brah" part. Project Mooncircle has a proven track record of putting out exceptional electronic music. Intelligent and accessible. This EP by Good Paul is further proof.

Checkers "Leisure Sports" EP

Bocce ball, croquet, lawn darts -- who doesn't love leisure time activities. Denver-based producer Checkers' debut EP is equally great, straddling dub traditions and progressive IDM theoretics.

Before I Die (Savannah)

If you're not familiar with Candy Chang, then definitely check out some of her stuff, which includes some incredible street art projects. The homies at SeeSAW in Savannah have installed two of Chang's "Before I Die" walls in Savannah to coincide with the 4th Annual Savannah Urban Arts Festival. On the side of abandoned homes, it features "Before I die _______" and allows passerby to fill in the rest. Here's a pic of one of the houses, located at the corner of 31st & Waters.

Amor, Est

Some epic, cinematic glitch from the Denver-based producer Amor, Est via the Trouser Trousers compilation that came out last week. It's an eclectic comp of underground producers corralled by Dinosaurus Rex.

MHz "World Premier"

One of El-P's favorite sample flips. Super smooth'n'easy take on the Stones' "Monkey Man."
MHz = Copywrite and Camu Tao.

Words from Pete Rock

There’s a lot of people that’s getting into it for the wrong reasons. A lot of people that live a hard life and then finally get a chance to take the negativity and turn it into something positive, and instead, you know what people talk about nowadays is the guns, the violence, and this East-West thing.

Portugal, the Man x RZA

I'm not the best barometer of popular culture, and testament to that: I end up finding out who's stars are rising thanks to who's getting remixed. I have heard two Portugal the Man remixes, but have yet to hear an actual song of theirs (or meet anyone who listens to their stuff). I guess that's life thanks to the cultural fragmentation caused by the internet. Anyway, the band asked RZA to do a remix and he said yes. The results are interesting. If you liked "Way Down" - the track by NASA, RZA and John Frusciante - then you'll be into this.

Rhyme Progression

Interviewed Rhyme Progression last week for Westword after stumbling across his tunes online. A dope MC/Producer from Colorado. This tune is off his debut record, All I Have is Music, which dropped last August.

ProCyse x Stephen Herrera

Here's a nice hip hop record from Denver duo ProCyse and Stephen Herrera. Herrera's production touches on a lot of styles - from Preemo-esque sample chop boom bap to more esoteric leftfield West Coast electronic influenced work. "Rest of the Night" is of the latter style. No matter what kind of beat it is - ProCyse is ready to spit on it, which he ably demonstrates over the albums 11 tracks. Dig it.

Deku

Some really nice chill electronic work from ATL-based producer Deku. Props to Unda for putting me on this. The beats start slow and atmospheric but are varied enough to keep one's interest while they build impressively upon themselves. Great accompaniment for light reading on a Sunday morning.

Del x Fela

Chop up some Fela Kuti samples and top it off with some Del. That's a recipe for a nice mixtape. Some new stuff from Sir DZL. It's amazing how prolific he's been over the past couple years.

Killa Mike x El-P "Don't Die"

This is the 3rd track we're hearing from Killa Mike's new album R.A.P. Music, which is produced by El-P and released via Williams Street (aka Adult Swim). This thing is some 21st century post-digital Public Enemy. Angry and conscious and grimy. Dig it.
