If I went back in time to 2003 (which was probably right around the time when El-P's Fantastic Damage was in constant rotation) and told myself that 10 years later Killer Mike and El-P would be one of the hottest collabs of the 21st century, I would've told myself to fuck off. Here comes Run the Jewels.

One of my favorite hip hop songs of recent memory. No jive. If you're not on that El-P x Killer Mike R.A.P. Music, you need to be. Politics and hip hop are inextricably intertwined, regardless of what Wayne or Gucci says. Reaganomics is a major part of hip hop's origin. Understand that. 

Killa Mike x El-P "Don't Die"

This is the 3rd track we're hearing from Killa Mike's new album R.A.P. Music, which is produced by El-P and released via Williams Street (aka Adult Swim). This thing is some 21st century post-digital Public Enemy. Angry and conscious and grimy. Dig it. 

G-Side

The other day I was thinking about how K.R.I.T. was probably my favorite rapper in the South at the moment. Then, G-Side's "Came Up" arrived, and while this Huntsville, AL duo haven't taken the top spot, they are definitely worth adding to the list of folks who are doing really good music. This beat is unexpected to say the least - classical violin spreading its wings over a beat that doesn't need burning hi-hats or an 808 sub - not the traditional Southern take at all. The second verse sort of reminds me of the way Apani flowed on Doom/Vik Vaughn's Vaudeville Villain
