The new old Latin jam

Fader is keeping it super cool with a new remix project collaboration with Latin soul legends Fania.
The first jam is a low key flip of Willie Colon's "Aguinile" by Mad Decent associate Toy Selectah. Ruthless. When horns drop about 3:00 minutes in, you might shed a tear.

From the ashes of my free time rises these tiny phoenixes (what is the proper plural form of phoenix?), flying to you bearing messages of hope for the future, or just an interesting way to spend a few minutes of your life...

• In what has been one of the best things of the week comes the results of slowing down Justin Bieber's new song "U Smile" to 1/8 speed. [Listen via Fader].  It's like a cross between Sigur Ros and God Speed You Black Emperor. 
• British comedian Tom Scott makes an astute observation about the state of journalism with these warning labels for newspapers..."This article is basically just a press release, copied and pasted." 
• Are you familiar with the new mediators? I wasn't until a few days ago, but I am intrigued by their mission - taking complex public issues and distilling them into more readily understandable visual aids. Here's an interesting series of posters explaining the credit crisis.

Sia "Clap Your Hands" Diplo Remix

This is a nice little remix from Philly's one and only Diplo. I have no frame of reference so far as what the original sounds like, but I doubt I would like it as much as I like this. Heavy and the subs and the skittering drums, it walks the line between dubstep and the dirty south.

South Rakkas Crew Stimulus Mixtape

'09-'10 will be the era when people look back and are unable to count how many artists put out free albums or mixtapes playing off the stimulus package aka the A.R.R.A.

To my knowledge, none of them have been this feisty though. Mad Decent's South Rakkas Crew brings some firey ragga infused dance madness on their Stimulus tape.

Grab a copy here. Which I found thanks to Fader who seem poised to be one of the few music/lifestyle/culture magazines that will survive the great purging of magazines that accompanied the era when many artists were releasing albums referencing the federal stimulus. They do a good job though, have solid taste, and do well balancing new and old media. Well done.

You should also stop by and pick up this Mad Decent remixtape of Gucci Mane if you're into that sort of thing. It's far out. Gucci is what he is, and some of these instrumentals are ridiculous. Epic, futuristic ish.
