L'Orange

The teaser for his forthcoming LP on Mello Music is this piano-drenched gem featuring Blu.

"All It Takes"

Def Dee has a new album blending originals, remixes and various other snippets from the Mello Music back catalog. This free taste is super fresh.

Castle

"Rotten Sushi" reminds of how I felt the first time I heard Aesop Rock and Blockhead's early 2000s collabos. This is just dusty and ill.

"Rap Time"

Trek Life, Bishop Lamont and Hardwerk lace this hard-chopped beat. Regal west coast vibe.

Quelle Chris

Ooohweee. Rugged.

Gensu Dean x Planet Asia

Check out the "Nautilus" flip on "Thoroughest" — that'll tell you the mindset.

Def Dee & Zar

Sounding like a skinny Lord Finesse. New Mello Music.

"Faces on the Dollar"

Stone cold ish from Gensu Dean and Planet Asia.

Guilty Simpson x Apollo Brown

Nobody does grit like the D

Oddisee "Way In Way Out"

Oddisee's new record is out this week, and to celebrate he's giving you this hot lil number called "Way In Way Out."

Cop People Hear What They See directly from Mello Music Group.

"Ramsesses"

Mello Music Group stays killing it. Gensu Dean x Homeboy Sandman & 7evenThirty. This beat is crazy (my guess is that sample originates with an Italian film score), and everyone rips it up.

DJ Soko x Guilty Simpson x Gensu Dean

Yup. Bout this. Guilty Simpson with the words, Gensu Dean on the beat, and DJ Soko with the cuts. This is being released as a limited edition 7" by Mello Music Group.

Oddisee "Slow It Down"

DC Producer/MC is back with a new project called Self Sacrifice and if the first track is any indication, then he's spent some time keeping his style tight. The beat is slower and more lush than anything I've heard from Oddisee recently. There's a lot of breathing room on here. This is pure decompression.

Gensu Beats

Gensu Beats is a TX based sample junkie on the come up with Mello Music. His new album Lo-Fi Fingahz is out in February, so to let you know what he's working with, GB and MMG dropped this mixtape showcasing the style, which is straight classic. Stroll through the guest list and remix subjects and it's like a stroll through the hallways of the Golden Era. If you like your soul grooves served chopped and grilled, then don't miss this.

DTMD x Oddisee

Mello Music is offering up this tune for free as of today. Tune your ears into a smooth soul chop courtesy of Dunc (the 1st D in DTMD) and the lyrical stylings of Toine and Oddisee. The DMV is putting out some serious hip hop the last couple years.

Has-Lo remixed by J-Zone

Has-Lo's "Light Years" gets re-cast over a J-Zone beat and the results are a real workout for your neck. Go ahead and bob your head, tap your feet or whatever you do because this is tight number right here.

The track is a friendly reminder that Has-Lo's Conversation B is out on vinyl today, and there's a limited edition pressing (500 only) available from FatBeats.

On a side note, if you're not old enough to remember J-Zone's 2002 record Pimps Don't Pay Taxes, you need to go back and find that. There's some incredible punchlines and nasty beats.

Daily Bread mixtape

If you need a dose Detroit courtesy of the Mello Music Group, check out the mixtape preview of the new Apollo Brown x Hassan Mackey collabo. Nice. Lots of boom bap. Grab a copy here.

Also, if you're not down with Mello Music Group's email list, get with it because they've been giving away free albums from the archives the past few weeks, including some old Hassan Mackey, Sareem and more.

Extra gifts under the tree pt. 2

The best of list is probably as good as its going to get without devoting more time than I can give it right now...so the rest of the week will be devoted to music that is both free and good. The 12 days of Christmas doesn't actually start until Dec. 25, and while I'm not going to go the distance with five golden rings and leaping lords, etc (btw, I heard on NPR that the contents of the song cost over $23,000 in 2010)...
I hope you were good this year and Santa gave you everything you asked for, or your celebration of light was particularly bright, or you've found all the values of Kwanza manifested inside yourself...
But whether the holidays have been good or bad, you should drive around listening to this awesome mixtape.

Oddisee x Stik Figa

The Mello Music Group, which is holding down real hip hop better than anyone right now, just dropped this little comp that shows off just how real it is right now.
This jam features DC-producer Oddisee (along with Dunc from DTMD) and Topeka-bred MC Stik Figa (who shows that parts of the midwest bear alot more southern influence than others) - the results are ill. The whole comp is tight.
