"Fire" video debut

KidSyc@Brandywine, Jubee & the Morning After, and Floco Torres - jamming at the Social Club on Congress St. It'll be everything you wanted from a live music show but were afraid to ask for. Taste II

The first Taste event took place two years ago at the former Meddin Slaughterhouse, which was artist studios at the time. It was live art, fashion show, tons of music, DJs, exhibits, food, beer and more...basically everything you could want wrapped up in one event. Now, the old Meddin building has taken on a new form, now as a state-of-the-art digital production facility, but they've opened their doors to the event this year. Expect 11 hours of awesomeness all sourced from Savannah, GA.

NYIB/Outlet April Fool's Party

No joke, the one year anniversary of New York is Boring (which I only recently realized was a Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (movie version) reference) as well as the release party for Outlet's Literary Issue is tomorrow night at the Wormhole. When Hipsters Attack

When Hipsters Attack is a local super group featuring members of Pilot Scott Tracey, Hot Pink Interior and many more. They debut at the Jinx this Saturday, followed by a set from KidSyc@Brandywine. There are scant few details on the WHA set, except that it will involve elaborate staging, a hipster pageant, and some kick ass jams. Check out my interview with Scott Stanton in Connect this week. Here's a little tidbit from Sunglasses farewell show at Hang Fire. They fucking rocked the place. It was a big sweaty mess by the time they wrapped up.

Dare Dukes live at Co-Lab

Here's a little video I shot of Dare and the Blackstock Collective performing at the Co-Lab last night. There's an unfortunate amount of crowd at the beginning, but it subsides as the song picks up.

Music at the Co-Lab

This friday, check out Sav alt-rocker Dare Dukes doing sets with Atlanta's Little Tybee and Book of Colors. It'll be an all ages show, which is nice, and the first show music show at Co-Laboratory. They've been holding the visual arts lately, and it's nice to see them branching out to help fill the need for all-ages venues (even if it's just hosting a show in an art gallery.)

Sunglasses "Whiplash" live at Hangfire 02-05-10

Sunglasses (MNUVR + Hula Hoop) killed it at Hangfire last night. Here's a video of them performing their new single "Whiplash", including dancing by Ricky Pirozzi, which makes more sense if you've seen the actual video for the song. It came out a week or two ago and is apparently making waves. Brady told me they've been getting love from Fader and Vice, as well invites to do some shows up in big cities.

Tronic Night at Livewire 2/25/10

Livewire is breaking out of the usual jammy booking trends to follow up the wildly successful RJD2 show with another night of electronic beats. This time starring Eliot Lipp, M.O. Theory and Nostalgia.
Show is 2/25/10 and a very reasonable $8/adv $10/door. I'm not crazy about M.O. Theory (who are actually from Charleston) because it seems a little easy (typical arrangements and canned, textureless sounds), but some of Lipp's stuff is solid - he was here a few months ago too, so his last show must have done pretty well. Nostalgia is also from Charleston, and apparently, he was nostalgic for the same thing that M.O. Theory was, because their stuff reminds me of everything I didn't care for about late 90s post-Fatboy Slim breakbeat.

01-12-10 RJD2, The Constellations, Dope Sandwich @ Livewire

Wow. Tuesday's are usually reserved for hard chilling, or maybe the occasional foray down to Hip Hop Night at the Jinx. But last night was something special. RJD2, The Constellations (ATL), Dope Sandwich (SAV), and Happy Chichester (who I actually didn't see because I got there late, and I think his set time got bumped up at the last minute).

As I approached, I could hear the "Beautiful Mine" aka that RJ Beat used for the Mad Men theme. His live set was off the chain. It combined turntables, a beat machine, sampler and live instruments. The end result was powerful - all the awesomeness of RJD2 without the constraints of simple sequencer patterns or a DJ set.

After he finished his set, by which time Livewire was packed to the gills and everybody was feeling good, the action shifted upstairs, where local hip hop group The Union of Sacred Monsters killed a fast and furious set mixing a couple new tracks with some old favorites. They also handed out 5 track sampler CDs with a few new joints off their upcoming album. Nice.




Like a couple of true gentlemen, USM wrapped just in time for The Constellations, an Atlanta-based group that I was unfamiliar with until last night, but who were impressive. (Their video is coming soon. I didn't have time to edit it yet.) They were a 6 or 7 piece band that was so deep they even had girls in mini-skirts singing back up and shaking tambourines. Their sound was a mix between 70s jam session super groups and early 90s grunge. Definitely keep an eye out for them in the future. They seemed to have a good time, and I think they'll be back once they finish the tour with RJ.

Dare Dukes @ the Bean 1/16/10

Is anyone else having problems writing 2010 in dates? 2 weeks in and I'm still not comfortable with it. No matter what year my hands feel comfortable typing you should go see Dare Dukes at the Sentient Bean next week end. It's kind of like those Holiday Inn Express commercials - but for your soul. You won't actually be a better person, but you might feel like one for a little while...

Some live Dare Dukes

If you aren't familiar with Dare Dukes and you live in Savannah, then shame on you - because he is really and truly the most gifted songwriter currently living in our fair city. If you don't live in Savannah, than you have an excuse, but its validity is shrinking, because he's been getting love from critics all over the world - including Canada, NYC, Belgium, Italy and others. So, not only is he coming to your town, he's coming to your country. You want to talk about painting an image with lyrics? There's few, if any, that do it better than Mr. Dukes. (And yeah, that's his real name too).

In his most recent newsletter, he offered up this little gem, a live version of "Old West Broad" (click to listen, right click to download) - the first song he wrote upon moving to Savannah - which he performed on Knoxville's WDVX with John Caselli accompanying.

His album Prettiest Transmitter of All is out now, so you should go buy it.

Basik Lee & Zone D - Live in Savannah

Live hip hop can be a bad thing. There are dudes who can kill it in the booth who just have no stage presence at all. I think that's why you don't see too many live albums, with the exception of the Roots, whose live album is completely separated from the proverbial chain.

This is what makes Basik Lee and Zone D's Live in Savannah album, which they've been passing out at shows for a couple weeks, an exception to the rule. As members of Savannah's Dope Sandwich crew, these two have played a major roll in holding down real hip hop in Savannah, hosting Hip Hop Night at the Jinx, battling anyone and everyone, and doing shows all over the place - as well as breaking and DJing respectively.

What it comes down to is these two might grind or hustle, but its focused on refining their art rather than slanging. They've probably logged more stage hours than most cats can dream of, and their live performance seems effortlessly energetic.

This was recorded down at Livewire on River Street. Backed by the UFO DJs, they proceed to shred freestyles and do live remixes of their tracks on top of classic beats. Its a document of two cats who know their craft having fun performing.
