A Bunch of 45s: Volume One

After going without records for a month or two during the process of moving to a new apartment, once we got settled, I had a renewed interest in digitizing my 45 collection. Here's a few gems I uncovered in the process.

Mostly 45s

Get weird. Get funky. Get this all-vinyl (and mostly 45s) mix from DJ Ray B. down in Savannah, GA. Shout out to everyone at Vinyl Appreciation.

Beet Stew Volume 5

Oh yeah. This is how I like to get down. Funky with a dub backbone and a rhythm piano.

Holiday Soul

Jon Doe finds time in his busy schedule to grace you with the only holiday music you need - the stone cold soul variety.

Arzachel

Remember when DangerMouse flipped this for the DangerDoom record? That was cool.

Galactic x Mystikal & Mannie Fresh

Some Louisiana hot sauce right hurr. Funk jammers Galactic mix it up with Mystikal and Mannie Fresh. Too bad Mystikal is back in jail, because nobody comes close to his delivery.

J.Rocc's Quantic Mix

Here's a good bet. Let J.Rocc take 10 years worth of Will Holland's musical output and turn it into a 40 minute mix. Go ahead and get down.

The call for entries to artists is open through early March, so if you're down in the Southeast and looking to come kick it and do your thing, here's a chance. Got an idea for something, but lack a venue to do it in? Hit us up.  Click here for info.

Pat's Jam by Seven Seas

I found a copy of this 45 at the SCAD Record Fair last weekend (although I wasn't the one who made this YouTube video).

It's one of several Glades label 45s I've turned up during recent digs, and all of them have been awesome, so I started doing a little research. Found out that Henry Stone worked Glade for a while. He also worked with King to sign James Brown for "Please, Please, Please" - put Jimmy Bo Horne and Betty Wright on Alston - and later introduced KC and the Sunshine Band on TK. He distributed some of the best disco in the South during 70s. Here's an excellent bio of Stone.

Start the weekend off with some funk

Just in case you needed either some serious funk, or a great drum sample, check out "Smokin' at Tiffany's" by Funk Inc.

Grab a copy here.

Because what do you do after you've had breakfast at Tiffany's, you start smokin' at Tiffany's...or at least you did in the 70s back when cigarettes weren't yet outed as major health risks.

Who's gonna start the party?

Oh, yeah. Candido's gonna start the party.

While you're listening, ponder who approved that cover art...His jewelry is straight off the set of the first Conan movie, a shirt might have been tasteful, and the red lighting lends the scene a hellish quality. It's probably a sin to be so funky...

Phays - The Excellent Adventure Vol. 1

A nice blend of breaks, jazz, garage, psych and a dash of reggae I just finished. No fancy DJ work, just a taste of some nicely selected music. There's 60+ cuts broken up into 4 tracks. I'd rather not take the time and space to post the contents here, but feel free to email me if you want the full tracklist.

This is the advance release prior to a new EP of original stuff in the works called Listening Habit that should be done in late spring.

Download.
