There's a Surprise in Every Box

A taste of the Buffalo, NY producer's forthcoming album. Groove Cereal has got those stone cold soul flips. [Update] Surprise in Every Box is out now (Pay What You Want).

"Hidden Basement"

In the low-key, jazz-sampling beat idiom, there are few doing it more proper than Jesse Futerman. His new project, Hidden Basement, is up on Bandcamp now.

"I Don't Want You (Anymore)"

Probably the chillest beat you'll hear this week.

Ta-ku x Hypebeast

Ta-ku has got to be one of my favorite producers out right now. So many good tracks. Here's a tasty mix he did for Hypebeast.

Slim Aarons Mix, Volume 2

It's been a while since volume 1, but hopefully it'll be worth the wait. The second installment in the musical compilation series paying homage to the photography of Slim Aarons is filled with bossa nova, Italian film scores, French pop, easy listening, exotica and other gems. The sort of thing that's appropriate for lavish, affluent poolside chilling.

Tracklist:
Luiz Henrique & Walter Wanderley - Blue Island
Frank Chacksfield - The Breeze and I
Serge Gainsbourg - La Javanaise
Joao Donato - Amazonas
The Andrews Sisters - Rum and Coca Cola
Frank Sinatra - Baubles, Bangles and Beads
Caterina Valente - Siboney
Tiny Bradshaw - South of the Orient
Bobby Solo - Una Lacrima Sul Viso
David Rose - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
Anita O'Day & Roy Eldridge - Tea for Two
Line Renaud - Dieu Que C'est Bon
Luiz Bonfa - Seville
Luis Bacalov - Caribo'Waves
Jorge Ben - Domingas
Bruno Nicolai - Allora li Treno
Fred Bongusto - Plato Del Dia
Fausto Papetti - Adagio in Do Minore
Mina Mazzini - Michelle

"Montana"

Love how lush this new track from Tycho is. The new album sounds like it'll be a masterwork in Mum meets Krautrock.

Beeeeeetz

Snowing in Denver today. Dropped this mix while chilling at the apartment. It's a bunch of odds and ends that I've been playing during sets at Audiodrome. Futuristic beats, fonky grooves, etc.

Download a copy. (includes cover art and tracklist)

Color of Cloe

This is that hard chill. Forget regular chilling.

Ackryte

I first heard Ackryte's Shades a year or so ago, and his new EP is in the same vein: Laidback beats with a solid dose of that post-Dilla waviness to them. Lean back.

Nalepa

Narcotic nod-along. Is it late or early?

Off the new Team Supreme comp from Alpha Pup, which is pretty awesome. From deep bass to club bangers.

Car Therapy

Ethereal makes some of the dopest music in Atlanta, and that's saying something. Spaced out, super-blunted future jazz and hip hop; like ATCQ x FlyLo x Atliens-era Outkast. Loose but tight.

Check out his thoughts on the record via Creative Loafing.

RUMTUM

Some new stuff from Holy Underground Records. Hard chilling.

"Total, Constant Paranoia"

Straight outta Denver. Chilling on a Saturday.

Laidback Sunday Evening

Chilling at home and threw down this mix. Contains awesomeness such as the Heliocentrics & Mulatu Astatke, Jane Birkin, Jesse Futerman, Karl Hector, War, a DITC remix and loads of other jams that will blow your mind.

Eric Ryan "Kelso Called"

I don't know anything about this other than it was made circa 2006 by Eric Ryan and is a tune perfected for the art of hard chilling. I also wonder whether the title is a That 70s Show reference...

Super Basement EP

I've posted about Canadian beatsmith Jesse Futerman before, but his Super Basement EP just wandered back into my rotation, and I'm enjoying it so much, I had to show some love. Super chill beats that will surely resonate with fans of Bonobo, Dilla or Shadow. I'm particularly feeling "Funds" which is a superior late night soundtrack.

Vinyl Appreciation

Sunday, July 31, 5-10 p.m. at Muse Arts Warehouse. Cool out with a laidback analog musical explosion that defies genres and the social mores of civilized high brow types.
