Savannah Urban Arts Festival

The Savannah Urban Arts Festival kicks off next Sunday (4/18) and continues with a full week of events, including a big day Saturday (4/24) with tons of live music, food and a visit from Art Beats and Lyrics. Check out the full schedule on the website.

art-o-rama

Get some culture at the opening reception for Art-O-Rama at Atwell's this friday (1/29) from 7-9 p.m.
It will feature some new projection work by Hebermehl and Dr. Z as well as a bevy of awesome local folks spanning style and medium. After-party and drink specials at T-Rex Mex.

Upcoming art show

I just got an email about this. I'm intrigued because this is not a familiar gallery space, and I think I might have looked at moving in there last year while looking for apartments - unless I'm thinking of another block of Henry St. I'm also intrigued because these are not graffiti artists I'm familiar with, at least around Savannah, and I thought I knew most of them, if not personally, then at least by name/reputation. Anyway, if anyone has more info, holler. Judging by the work on the flier, these guys are pretty nice. I'm curious to see what this show is about.

Co-Lab Grand Opening

I don't have much info on this show, but I've been seeing their posters and fliers all over the place, and I like to see young folks taking initiative and opening new ventures, especially artistically inclined ones, and a little off the beaten path. Bravo. Stop by tomorrow night and see some art, have some food, and support new growth in Savannah. 

His Land is R.Land

I just had the pleasure of interviewing Atlanta-based artist R.Land today for a piece that'll be in next week's Connect.  I only meant to ask a couple of questions, but we ended up talking about art, music, Southern-ness, gentrification and the intersection between corporate practices and counterculture endeavors - and the conversation lasted about 45 minutes.

He's made a name for himself with crazy public art endeavors like this, which was hanging in various parts of Atlanta and beyond circa 2001:

There's also the various manifestions of the Loss Cat series, which made it's way into Found Magazine a while back. Land says they were disappointed when he informed them it was his creation, and not an authentic lost cat flier.

He also did the cover art for one ATHF DVDs, and has been working with the Williams Street guys on some new stuff as well.

 

He's got a show opening at Gallery Espresso on Bull St. in Savannah this week. The opening reception is Thursday. It'll be hanging all month. Grab some coffee and check it out.

redeSIGN Art Exhibit May 15th

Jake and Miriam over at New Moon of Savannah have created another great event, switching focus from their monthly music series The Listening Room to an art exhibit that takes damaged street signs and hands them over to a diverse set of artists from throughout the city. the redeSIGN show will run from May 11-18, with a reception on Friday May 15th from 7-9pm @ 312 W. Broughton St. More info here.

The show is being done in partnership with the City of Savannah (they didn't steal the signs, just got a hold of some damaged ones) and the Savannah Bicycle Campaign.
