Fool's Gold "Nadine" Weird Tapes Remix
You may remember an early summer post about Fool's Gold, the L.A. collective who are part of the emerging world-music-hipster-dance genre. (There's a lot more of it than it's hyphenated name might imply). Their video for lead single "Surprise Hotel" is pretty great, and it served as reminder of how different the girls sitting poolside look when they are in an indie video versus a rap video (some might need more iron in their diets).
To help remind you that you might want to give someone their album as a gift this holiday season, they are disseminating remixes from the album, and one of my favorites is this one from Weird Tapes.
The close runner up though is the Mad Decent Toadally Krossed Out remix of "Surprise Hotel". Listen to how the toad sounds completely give way to a caliber of dance music that harkens back to the dance glory days of the early 90s.

Video: Fool's Gold "Surprise Hotel"
LA world-dance-fun collective Fool's Gold, who for better or worse chose the same name as the Chicago-based dance label with no relation to them, just released a video for their single "Surprise Hotel." It's very, late-David Byrne meets Paul Simon's Graceland with just a hint of Rusted Root. It's also very fun. Like going to the beach.
The video projects that level of fun, and mixes it in with senior citizens...
Two observations:
1) Girls next to pools in indie videos are way different than the ones in rap videos
2) The opening sequence makes me have to pee.

Fool's Gold...No, not that Fool's Gold

Don't be confused, but there is another Fool's Gold on the scene, and it's not A-Trak's label, it's a music collective from Los Angeles that is making some crazy music. Their sound is the sonic personification of several African traditions dancing on a foundation of solid alt-rock sensibilities that was built next to a rabbi's house who listened to old soul records with the volume turned up. They've been doing some shows with Fujiya & Miyagi, and Cat Power, among others. So keep an eye out for these guys.
