This is what happens when you make music while working at a sensory isolation chamber: Apparently it frees up some time to unleash some crazy IDM/Jungle reminiscent of early Squarepusher, Jega, etc. And seriously, that's his actual day job.

Madlib x Freddie Gibbs pt. 2

After blowing hip hop's collective mind with "Thuggin'" last year, Madlib and Freddie Gibbs are collabing again, this time for the Shame EP. Of course it's not a disappointment, Gibbs might be the toughest MC out right now. Or at least neck and neck with KRIT. 

Unda "Tomorrow Never Comes"

Props to Unda doing his thing on this new EP called Tomorrow Never Comes. Bangkok to ATL, he handles all the production and spits on a couple tracks too. Definitely feeling the opening tune "Dear Aquarius," but there's jewels scattered all the way from front to back. The material is considerably darker than some of his past work, a symptom of some things he was going through last year. Give it a listen:

Mo Kolours

Very chill EP from Mo Kolours that touches on some dub, broken beat and sundry other influences. This one is for early summer hard chilling - cocktails and bocce ball - and that sort of thing.

Past Paste EP

 I've decided to open up the vaults and release some new/old tunes. Over the next couple weeks, I'll unveil a couple of EPs and singles that haven't been released elsewhere, things recorded sometime between 2007 and 2012 in four apartments and at least two states.
The reason it's all in smaller formats - rather than one whole album - is because it's fairly diverse, and some of it just wouldn't work together. The first in the series is call the Past Paste EP. It's experimental downtempo - although that ranges from some dark, deep, non-traditional dubstep to some glitchy off-kilter beats. Enjoy.

Jealous Guys "AudioBook"

 SF's Jealous Guys team up with producer Jeremy "Zodiac" Rose for this EP called AudioBook. Apparently, FADER thinks Zodiac is gonna be a big deal.

What's up with all these young producers slowing down on some post-Drake-triphop. Clams Casino is on it. What happened to cats spitting over 96 bpm, instead of half-step 130? It's cool for now, but all you youngsters need to eat a steak and man up sometimes. I'm digging "Genesis" and "Miss San Francisco." Not so crazy about "Life Insomniac" or "Walkin Around."

Adrian Younge

 Adrain Younge made hip hop in the late 90s, then he decided to learn how to play real instruments. A decade later, he's dropping this jam-tastic EP on Wax Poetics. You know it's gotta be funky. "1969 Organ" is definitely rocking your world if you enjoyed the Heliocentrics or Karl Hector and have a penchant for - you guessed it - psychedelic organ riffs! You need this in your life. Merry Christmas.

Yancy

Yancy came down and did a set yesterday during the Savannah Urban Arts Festival and it was dope. He's got of Jay-Z type style but without the pomposity or the dope game. Let this joint ride past the intro and get blessed with a real smooth piano line and some suave mic control.

Holy Ghost! isn't a laptop somewhere with a guy pretending to be a whole band because he either lives in hermetical isolation or can't get along well enough with people to create something meaningful...What?...Holy Ghost! are guys who play instruments, and the results are like what you'd hear from the guy with the laptop, but in this case, even cooler...You can alternate between dancing wildly and acting aloof...Big shout out to Ben Fries who directed the video, which is awesome.

Holy Ghost! just put out an EP with DFA that you should pick up ASAP, o.k.?

J.Period + K'Naan = The Messengers

Earlier this year J.Period dropped one of my favorite mixtapes, a best of Q-Tip retrospective that came out right before The Renaissance came out. Now he's back with K'Naan, who I've heard anecdotally is one of the most real and humble people in the convoluted world of hip hop right now. They joined up for a series of EPs paying homage to various influential musicians by sampling various joints and then topping them off with all sorts of brilliant verses.

Here is one of my favorite cuts, "Johnny Was" off the 2nd EP, the tribute to Bob Marley.



They just dropped the 3rd EP, a tribute to Bob Dylan, swing by Potholes In My Blog to pick up a copy.

Union Of Sacred Monsters

The Dope Sandwich crew has formed like Voltron to create the Union of Sacred Monsters, a group featuring Basik Lee, Knife, Zone D, Righteous and Mr. Brown. After years of doing shows all over the place, hosting the longest running active event downtown (the Tuesday night weekly hip hop extravaganza at the Jinx), and dropping numerous mixtapes and solo projects, the crew has finally gotten around to putting out an EP of new material as the Union of Sacred Monsters.
