MMoss

This is like revisionist history. Early Pink Floyd with a cleaner mix and richer instrumentation. Relish some deeply layered psych harmonies.

[Video] Baby Baby - "Haters"

Baby Baby are one of the best young rock bands in the Southeast. They put on a killer live show, often without wearing pants. Straight out of Carrolton.
Their new video includes sad clowns, grown folks shoving children, no-pants dance parties on a train, bicycle gangs and highway jam sessions. F*ck yes, gentlemen.

Night Beats

The Night Beats will be rocking the Larimer Lounge on 3/7 and if you're into thrashy psychedlia (think Black Lips proteges) and live in the Denver area, then you don't want to miss this.

Cusses "Worst Enemy"

Big shouts out to the Savannah folks behind this gem. Bob Jones on the camera and editing + Angel and the two Brians (Cusses) for kicking out the jams. Rawwwk. Cusses debut album will be out later this year and it's going to be off the chain.

Cusses "The Wait is Over"

If you have any contact with the rock n roll scenes in Georgia or the Carolinas, you might be familiar with Cusses. The Savannah trio seems to be friends with myriad awesome bands from Florida to Virginia, and they recently went up to Asheville, NC to record their first album under the guidance of Dan Hannon (who's worked with Manchester Orchestra, among others).

For those that have been familiar with the band, the lengthy pursuit of recorded material able to capture their incredible live show, and the fact that they leaked "The Wait is Over," might just be a coincidence, but I prefer to think that it is a declarative statement. Here, finally, is a song you can enjoy without having to go out past 10 p.m.
[Update] Cusses' drummer Brian Lackey says it was only a 24-hour preview, so now you'll have to wait until 2012 for the album release...

Young Buffalo "Baby Demons"

It's a shame this single didn't hit ears closer to the summertime because this is some road trip music. Young Buffalo is a Mississippi duo who I had the pleasure of meeting in Savannah during Stopover last spring. They recorded a Stopover Session at Meddin before hitting the road. They were hungry for Arby's, and I think drove across the city to find one before leaving town (we gave them the best directions possible, and since they're still putting out music, I can assume they survived). Skittering, two-steppin' drums are racing a power-pop guitar riff and distant, melodic vocals for a sound that is sure to titillate college radio listeners.

Odonis Odonis

Odonis Odonis is on FatCat, a label with good ears in my opinion - really nailing a quality spectrum of rock iterations and sub-species. This here is crafted in the tradition of distorted surf-psych. The meltdown toward the end is spacey, bottoming out a thoroughly driving groove.

If you like this, you should also definitely be listening to the Crocodiles and Abby GoGo.

Gyspy Treasures "Four Horsemen"

Do you need some heavy, heavy, deep psych? The kind of stuff that just locks you into a dark tunnel of writhing introspection...here it is from an LA-SF outfit called Gypsy Treasures. They've got a new EP called Buried Goods.

KZL, I hope you see this post, because I think you'll dig this video.

Baby Baby "Kidz"

The guys from Baby Baby are awesome. So is their new video. Some great feel good rock n roll from Georgia. Get with it.

Pujol

No longer is Pujol just a misspelling of one of the greatest baseball players to wear a St. Louis Cardinals jersey. This young Nashvillian named Pujol is responsible for this Jack White produced jam that owes a stylistic nod to the charms of the Damned. Check it out here (and download it if you like it) via Spin.

Death Becomes Even the Maiden

DBETM is coming to Savannah next week to challenge Cusses to a rock battle (10/09/10) at the Co-Lab (631 E. Broad St.) It should be pretty epic. Here's what Cusses is up against: "Control"

Cusses at the Jinx

This is a photo of Angel from Cusses' show at the Jinx a week or two ago. It was packed. They are undoubtedly the most beloved local band at the moment. Awesome live show.

Video: Thee Oh Sees "Meat Step Lively"

Thee Oh Sees are ridiculously prolific, but that's cool because their recipe is simple: Punk-y, garage-y, kick out the jams rock n roll. They do it better than most. If you like the Black Lips, this is similar, but with a hint less psychedelia, and a pinch more rage. Coincidentally (or not), the Black Lips and Thee Oh Sees will be in Miami this fall for the Bruise Cruise. This video is for a song ("Meat Step Lively") off their new album Warm Slime, which is their 2nd album in the last year or so.

Safe as milk

Although Captain Beefheart may have become notorious for his over the top stuff a little later, his first album is a pretty awesome blues/garage jamboree.

Observe.
"Plastic Factory"

Did you know the Captain and Frank Zappa went to high school together? It's true.

Slew

There I was, unsuspectingly checking my email when Boom! the new project from turntablist par excellence Kid Koala's new project called Slew arrives.

In the words of Monty Python, 'And now for something completely different."

I've enjoyed the Kid's releases in the past: quirky, warbling turntable experimentations, usually accompanied by nice beats and of course, ridiculous cuts. "The Emperor's New Clothes" is lovely, but nothing, not even the far out stuff he did for cuts on the Deltron 3030 album prepared me for what was about to be unleashed by Slew.

Here's the gist: Kid Koala teams up with the rhythm section of Wolfmother and drops a turntable-laden psych rock record. I know. It's just crazy enough to work.

Remember the first time you heard a white stripes record (if you're old enough to have had that record be Elephant or earlier)? Remember the way the straight-forward rocking managed to be both immediately gratifying, and yet enjoyable over the long haul too. How the recipe seemed so simple, and yet no one had done it quite like them. That's how I felt when I heard the 3rd track off this Slew record, and the whole album is dope.

This show is either on the road, or about to hit the road. They aren't playing any shows south of the mason-dixon line, so I'm not gonna post the schedule out of spite, but if you live on the West Coast or in NYC, you can probably see this in person if you do some homework.

The Darlings - Yeah I Know

The Darlings are from New York. The quartet just jumped out of a time machine, carrying nothing but their instruments and a timeless formula for fun rock and roll. Their songs are short, upbeat romps through innocent fields ripe with parties, girls and beer. Everything sounds just a little fuzzy, and if you close your eyes you can take yourself back to a kick ass house party or garage concert and imagine that these guys are playing and everyone is having an awesome time.

They are reminiscent of a lot of bands, a mash up of 60s fuzz-rock, some lost indie rockers circa 1986, and a hint of newer groups like the Strokes and their ilk.
This song "Eviction Party" is one of my favorites, and fairly representative of the album as a whole. This is not one of those projects where you need to skip songs. You can put it in and let it ride. Definitely a crucial piece of fodder for roadtrip mixes.

Violens "Doomed" + MGMT Remix

Violens // "Doomed" from Violens on Vimeo.

I like this song.

I don't know whether I'm late or early to the Violens bandwagon, but I'm on it. Apparently these guys have been on the road with some folks whose music I really enjoy (according to their press kit):
They have toured and performed in the US with Grizzly Bear, Yeasayer , Handsome Furs, Deerhunter, Chairlift, Telepathe, and Jay Reatard among others. Before heading into the studio to record their debut album, they closed out 2008 supporting MGMT in the UK.

I can certainly see how they would pair nicely with Grizzly Bear, who I think is playing in ATL with TV On the Radio tomorrow, so if you're around the A at the appropriate time, check that out.
